Apple is known for going the extra mile to keep its users safe. Even their browser, Safari, has a\u00a0\u2018Fraudulent Website Warning\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0feature that is reliant on Google\u2019s safe browsing technology. However, with iOS 13, Apple has paired up with Tencent\u2019s Safe Browsing technology to keep its users safe from fraudulent websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this fraudulent feature to work,\u00a0Apple<\/a>\u00a0has to share the user\u2019s data like browsing history with Google. While the URLs are hashed, Apple also sends a log of users\u2019 IP addresses to\u00a0 Google<\/a>. It is most likely that Tencent will also receive the same data. People aren\u2019t worried about sharing browsing history with Google, because it\u2019s Google. But sharing any personal data with a Chinese company can make anyone uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the risk of sharing data with Tencent?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For a safe browsing technology to work, the software needs user\u2019s IP addresses to work. Tencent has a recorded history of sharing its data with the Chinese government. The Chinese govt can use this data for surveillance or other illegal purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, a malicious provider can manipulate Google\u2019s safe Browsing to de-anonymize a user by linking site requests. This is possible in theory. If Tencent implements this approach, the Chinese govt can and will pressurize the company into revealing the identity of protestors in Hong Kong. This is a dangerous precedent to be set by Apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apple hasn\u2019t officially commented on the issue. However, Apple previously banned a Hong Kong protest app on its store under the pretext,\u00a0\u201cbest protect our [the] users.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0If Apple goes ahead with Tencent, it will be under a lot of scrutinies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How to evade this situation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
